Wreck claims Topekan's life

A Topeka man was killed and another seriously injured Saturday night in a two-vehicle accident in the 3000 block of N.W. 62nd, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office said.

A Nissan and Ford pickup truck collided head-on around 8:10 p.m., killing the driver of the Nissan and badly injuring the other driver, said Shawnee County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Dan Lotridge.

The Ford pickup truck was heading west when it crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the Nissan, Lotridge said.

A passenger in the Nissan was taken to a local hospital for injuries that weren't believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators said the vehicles likely were driving within the 45 mph speed limit on the road. The driver of the Nissan wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Sheriff's officials said the accident is under investigation. The names of the accident victims weren't available Sunday night.

Man robbed in North Topeka

A 31-year-old homeless man was robbed early Saturday in North Topeka, police said.

The robbery took place between 5:30 and 5:50 a.m. in the 1000 block of N.W. Jackson, according to police reports.

The victim told police a robber stole $40 in cash from him. No weapon was used in the incident, according to police.

No injuries were reported in connection with the robbery.

Fire damages Lawrence building

LAWRENCE -- A two-alarm fire damaged an industrial building early Sunday on the city's east side, authorities said.

The blaze was reported at 6:27 a.m. at a building at 1923 Moodie Road.

The building was being renovated for use by the Free State Brewery, officials said.

Lawrence fire companies were able to bring the blaze under control by 7:58 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday night. No dollar loss was available.
