2007 Howard J. Berman prize awarded

Christine Wagner, SSJ and St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center have received the 2007 Howard Berman Prize and Dr. Louise Bennett and Brown Square Health Center have received the 2008 Howard Berman Prize in recognition of each organization's commitment to meeting the health care needs of Rochester's under-served populations, according to release from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

The Howard Berman Prize, a $10,000 cash award, is named for the former CEO of The Lifetime Healthcare Companies. Financed through a fund established with donations from more than 160 of Berman's colleagues and admirers, the prize was established to reward community-based, nonprofit organizations in upstate New York that pursue local initiatives to improve public access to health care.

St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center in Rochester, led by Christine Wagner, provides no cost/low cost primary health care, mental health counseling, adult education and social service advocacy to the uninsured and under-insured in Monroe County.

Brown Square Health Center and Westside Health Services in Rochester offer a unique Refugee Health Program, led by Dr. Louise Bennett, that provides ongoing health care to more than 3,000 refugees from Sudan, Burma, Somalia, Cuba and other parts of the world who are settling in the Rochester community.
