False Amber Alert leads police to convenience store robber

Daily Record and the Kansas City Daily News-Press, Mar 5, 2007 by The (Kansas City) Daily Record staff

A Topeka man accused of robbing a convenience store and then filing a false police report that triggered an Amber Alert faces several charges in Jackson County.

Marion L. Montgomery, 22, was charged Friday with second-degree robbery and making a false report earlier that day.

According to a police report, Raytown police officers were responding to a reported robbery at a QuikTrip on U.S. Highway 350. While in route, they were flagged down by Montgomery, who told them his vehicle had been carjacked, and his 2-year-old son was still inside.

The officers became suspicious of Montgomery after he repeatedly asked whether he could leave the scene.

Police questioned the QuikTrip clerk about Montgomery, and the clerk identified him as the man who stole cash from the store's register just a few minutes earlier.
