Largent to resign to run for governor
Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Jun 8, 2001
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rep. Steve Largent, R-Okla., who came to Congress as part of the Republican revolution of 1994, intends to resign his House seat on Nov. 29 to run for governor.
In a statement, Largent said he decided to make his move because his constituents "need full-time representation in Washington in the months ahead."
Largent's seat is reliably Republican, and his successor will be chosen by special election at a date to be determined.
The congressman has asked Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating and state lawmakers to consider setting a special election date in an upcoming special session so the district will not go unrepresented.
"We applaud and respect Congressman Largent's decision as far as amending the special session call," Keating spokesman Dan Mahoney said. "We will work with the Republican and Democratic legislative leaders to see if that's the best thing to do."
Nov. 29th is the seventh anniversary of Largent's first swearing in, his spokesman, Brad Keena, said. It is also the probable end of the current congressional session.
Largent said his decision came after travels around the state in which voters said the state needed a change in direction. "We must ensure that our children and grandchildren receive a quality education in Oklahoma and are able to secure challenging and rewarding employment in Oklahoma," he said.
His decision to remain in Congress until the end of November, coupled with the likelihood of a Republican successor, means the GOP will be at full strength as it debates and votes on legislation.
Cathy Keating, the governor's wife, announced intentions to run for the seat and was in Washington in recent weeks to prepare for a campaign. State Rep. John Sullivan, R-Tulsa, has announced his candidacy.
Largent said he will remain neutral in any special Republican Primary for his seat.
The House currently is comprised of 221 Republicans, 210 Democrats and two independents. There are two vacancies.
