Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Mar 3, 2005 by Journal Record Staff

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative was presented the 2004 Wind Power Cooperative of the Year Award from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, its Cooperative Research Network and the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America Program.

The Anadarko-based generation and transmission cooperative was honored during the CRN Tech Advantage Expo and 2005 National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's annual meeting in San Diego.

Western Farmers Electric was selected for the honor by a panel of wind, utility and rural power representatives.

In January of 2003, Western Farmers Electric became the first utility in Oklahoma to sign a purchase power agreement with a wind farm developer.

Scott Williams, a commercial and industrial marketing manager at Western Farmers Electric, accepted the award from P.J. Dougherty, national director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America program.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative was selected for its leadership among all rural electric cooperatives in expanding opportunities for wind power, Dougherty said. Your program is a model for other generation and transmission facilities to use wind energy to better both their bottom line and their communities.
