Oklahoma County clerk's office puts land records online
Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Apr 8, 2005 by Journal Record Staff
The Oklahoma County clerk's office will soon make available to the public electronic documentation of all land records for the county - even records filed before Oklahoma was a state, County Clerk Carolynn Caudill said.
This has been an enormous undertaking of historic value to all our citizens, Caudill said.
Her office will finish scanning and indexing about 8.6 million pages of land records by the end of summer.
Our rich heritage and history will soon be available to all citizens to use if they have Internet access, she said. This is exciting and we're looking forward to finishing this incredible task for the benefit of our citizens.
Caudill said the data will be of particular value to genealogists.
More and more people want to know their genealogy and family tree, she said. We see them every day poring over records in the county clerk's office looking for clues and evidence of their roots. In just a few months, they'll be able to pore over these documents at home via their home computer.
The Oklahoma County clerk's office contracted out the project to low-bid winner HTC Global Services of Troy, Mich. The project has taken three years at a cost of about $1.8 million, and has been funded through a $5 records preservation fee approved by the state Legislature.
