Oklahoma 'Achievers under 40' profile: Kevin Calvey

Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), May 20, 2005 by Journal Record Staff

Rep. Kevin Calvey, R-Oklahoma City, has done a little bit of everything.

He is currently the chairman of the state House Revenue and Taxation Committee, responsible for all tax legislation.

The graduate of Bishop McGuiness High School was a 1984 National Merit Scholar. Calvey attended the University of Dallas and graduated cum laude in 1988.

Five years later, Calvey earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and became an attorney. He moved back to the Sooner State and established his own law practice.

In 1998, Calvey was elected to the House of Representatives from District 94 - southeast Oklahoma City and Del City. He was the first Republican and the youngest person ever elected from that district.

Calvey earned a Pathfinder Award from The State Chamber and several Guardian of Small Business awards from the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

I thoroughly enjoy serving the legislature, Calvey said. It is very rewarding being able to assist citizens in getting information about their government, and to cut through government red tape to bring assistance to those who need it.

In 2003, Calvey joined the 45th Infantry Brigade in the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He is a first lieutenant.

I believe leadership is done best by example, Calvey said. With so many constituents serving in the armed forces during this war on terror, it is only natural that I should do my part and serve also.

Calvey is involved in more than a dozen organizations. He is a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma and Leadership Oklahoma City. He is a member of Rotary Club 29 - downtown Oklahoma City - and the Academy for State Goals.

He is also a Sunday school teacher at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Del City. Calvey also serves as volunteer legal counsel for battered women, which is provided by the YWCA Women's Shelter. In addition, he is on the advisory board for multiple programs at the Mid-Del Technology Center and for the South Oklahoma City Council of Neighborhoods.
