Nation's largest uniform supplier sues unions in U.S. District Court

Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Mar 7, 2008

The nation's largest uniform supplier has filed a federal lawsuit against two unions that have been trying for five years to win exclusive bargaining rights for its employees.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday by Cincinnati-based Cintas Corp. in U.S. District Court in New York accuses the unions of extortion. It accuses Unite Here and the Teamsters of violating federal and state racketeering laws.

Unite Here says Cintas needs to make workplace safety improvements and calls the lawsuit a continuation of the company's attempts to harass, bully and repress workers.

The lawsuit consolidates a defamation action Cintas filed in Ohio four years ago against the unions.

On March 6, 2007, Eleazar Torres Gomez was killed in the company's Tulsa plant after he fell into an operating industrial dryer and died while clearing a jam of wet laundry on a conveyor that carries the laundry from the washer into the dryer.
