Oklahoma City named to IDG InfoWorld Top 100

Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Dec 2, 2008

The city of Oklahoma City has been named to IDG InfoWorld's Top 100 IT Solutions.

InfoWorld honors projects for using technology to meet business and technical objectives. Oklahoma City won for the implementation of the world's largest city-owned and -operated municipal Wi-Fi mesh network.

The wireless broadband network, which was initially launched in 2006, but substantially enhanced for 2008 with new applications, provides police better access to criminal information in real time and allows them to download photos, file reports and even do paperwork in the field through laptops installed in patrol cars.

The network also helps firemen locate water hydrants, review site maps, building floor plans and hazardous materials information while en route to a fire or accident.

The $5 million Wi-Fi mesh network system was funded with public safety capital sales tax and capital improvement funds.
