University of Phoenix brings MBA to Harford

Daily Record, The (Baltimore), Mar 16, 2002 by Jill Cortright

Working adults will be able to pursue an MBA in Harford County when the University of Phoenix comes to Aberdeen's Higher Education and Applied Technology Center, or HEAT Center, in May.

Starting in May, the University of Phoenix will offer an MBA program for working adults at the HEAT Education and Conference Center, and will start a bachelor's degree program in information technology in the fall, depending upon demand.

"We had wanted to offer an MBA program. We felt a need for it," said James LaCalle, dean of community and business services at Harford Community College. "The University of Phoenix was available. They have a good reputation, and we felt good about them coming here."

Several area colleges, including the College of Notre Dame and The Johns Hopkins University, offer degree programs through the HEAT Center, which is targeted toward working adults.

"The purpose of the HEAT Center is to let people get degrees above the associate's level without leaving the county," LaCalle said.

An MBA and a bachelor's degree in IT are not available at the HEAT Center or elsewhere in the county.

Open houses and orientations for the new location will be held April 18 and May 16 at the HEAT Education and Conference Center.
