Hughes shifts to Nasdaq

The common stock of Hughes Communications Inc., of Germantown, a provider of broadband satellite networks and services, began trading on the Nasdaq Global Market on Friday under the symbol HUGH, the company said. Hughes' stock has traded on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board market under the symbol HGCM since the company went public in February.

Hail Columbia!

Columbia Medical Practice, of Columbia, a multi-specialty primary care group, said it signed a long-term lease for 33,000 square feet of space at the Columbia Medical Campus, which was recently acquired jointly by Asset Capital Corp. and Brownstone Capital LLC. The new owners plan to spend more than $1.6 million to renovate the two office buildings in the 36-acre property.

TU gets $100K grant

Towson University said it was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, of San Francisco, in support of the Auburn Society, Towson University's learning-in-retirement program. The society's name will be changed to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Towson University.

Ventura's assist

Mearns Park, a two-building office and warehouse complex in Warminster, Pa., obtained $16.5 million in financing from an institutional lender arranged through the services of Bowie-based Ventura Commercial Mortgage Co. Ventura President James P. Ventura was the exclusive financing representative for the property's owner, according to a news release.

E.coli detector

A Maryland company has developed a fast way to detect the dangerous E. coli bacteria, which recently caused one and possibly other deaths and sickened more than a hundred people in 23 states. Innovative Biosensors Inc., of College Park, has developed an E. coli test that gives results in less than four minutes by making infected cells glow blue. In the past, it might take up to two or three days to confirm results.
