Primary challenge possible for Rep. Wayne Gilchrest

Daily Record, The (Baltimore), May 25, 2007

Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, Maryland's longest-serving Republican congressman, could see a primary challenge next February from a state lawmaker who calls himself a more "mainstream Republican." State Sen. Andrew Harris, R-Baltimore County, announced Thursday that he was likely to mount a primary challenge to the 17-year incumbent.

Gilchrest, who represents the Eastern Shore, has ruffled some Republican feathers for his opposition to the war in Iraq, and has also opposed fellow Republicans on environmental matters. Harris, who was re-elected in 2006, won't have to give up his Senate seat to run against Gilchrest.
