University of Maryland opens public health school

Daily Record, The (Baltimore), Sep 27, 2007

The University of Maryland on Wednesday formally launched its School of Public Health, which will train students to understand and confront health problems ranging from HIV infection to obesity. The school at the College Park campus also will concentrate on turning public health research into public policy and programs that improve the region's communities.

The state already is home to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health -- one of the most prestigious such schools in the world. But University of Maryland officials say their public program with lower tuition will help more low-income and minority students address problems that disproportionately affect their populations.
