Marylanders receive awards: May 9, 2008

Kristina M. Johnson, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at The Johns Hopkins University, is one of 72 newly named fellows of SPIE, an international society advancing an interdisciplinary approach to the science and application of light. Johnson is being honored for achievements in optical engineering and optics education. She was the first female dean in Duke University's 60-year history when she was appointed dean of the Pratt School of Engineering.

Manekin LLC received three Awards of Excellence at the NAIOP Awards 2008 ceremony hosted by the Maryland Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. Winning projects included: Manekin headquarters, Best Office Build-to-Suit (over 50,000 sf); McGaw Plaza, Best New Retail; and Water's Edge Corporate Campus, Best Office Mid Rise/Low Rise.

Devaney & Associates has been awarded five Alfred Knight Awards for its work on behalf of its clients, OrthoMaryland, Medical Mutual and Carroll Hospital Center. The agency received top honors for media placement and design work in a print advertisement for client OrthoMaryland and second-place awards for work on behalf of OrthoMaryland and Medical Mutual. Devaney & Associates also worked with Carroll Hospital Center to launch their new inpatient hospice facility, yielding a second-place win.

Nancy Kass and Sean Tunis will be honored with the Nina Wood Collier Arts Champion Award at Taste the Arts III. Taste the Arts is the annual fundraiser for the Maryland Chapter of Young Audiences/ Arts for Learning (YA). Kass and Tunis sponsor more than 25 projects that actively engage Baltimore City students in arts education programs through their Alison Rose Tunis Fund at Baltimore Community Foundation.

Dr. Edbert Hsu, an emergency medicine physician at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has received the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation's 2008 Leadership Award. Hsu, an expert in disaster medicine, has helped develop emergency medicine and disaster preparedness programs throughout the world and has led statewide efforts to enhance hospital pharmaceutical preparedness for public health emergencies. He is the director of training and serves on the leadership group of Johns Hopkins University's Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response.

The Modular Building Institute (MBI) recognized Williams Scotsman, a leading provider of modular space solutions in North America, with several honors at its annual convention. The company received six Awards of Distinction in the categories of permanent modular, temporary modular and marketing for projects completed in 2007. Additionally, Williams Scotsman's co-founder, the late A.V. Williams, was inducted into MBI's Hall of Fame. The company also received an MBI Service Award for its contributions to the industry over the past 25 years.
