Lockheed's $1.2B contract
Lockheed Martin Corp., of Bethesda, the world's largest defense contractor, announced it received a $1.2 billion contract from the Transportation Security Administration to manage its Integrated Hiring Operations and Personnel program. Under the potential eight- year contract, Lockheed Martin will develop a fully integrated human resources system to support the recruiting, assessing, hiring, paying and promoting of all TSA employees. Lockheed Martin also will develop and deploy an advanced HR system, as well as provide the people and processes to manage TSA's human resource services.
Northrop signs building lease
Opus East LLC, of Rockville, a full-service design-build development firm serving the mid-Atlantic region, announced that Los Angeles-based defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. has signed a 10-year, full-building lease for an as-yet unbuilt project in Linthicum, near Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The 9.5-acre site in the West*Quest Technology Park is close to Northrop's Linthicum-based Electronics Systems sector. Construction of the five- story, 160,000-square-foot, Class A office building is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2008.
SSA taps Hughes for work
Hughes Network Systems LLC, of Germantown, a provider of broadband satellite network services, said it has been selected as prime contractor by the Social Security Administration to provide operational support services for its distance learning network. The agreement is valued at more than $40 million over five years, and the company said it has received an initial task order valued at $4 million. Under the agreement, Hughes will provide total life cycle management of the SSA's Interactive Video Tele-training network, including satellite airtime (space segment); equipment; maintenance; integration; on-site staffing; and hub operation and maintenance.
Micros' Burger King contract
Micros Systems Inc., of Columbia, a provider of computer systems to the hospitality and retail industries, announced that its point- of-sale equipment has been selected by the Burger King Corp. for installation in all 800 company-owned restaurants in the United States. The deployment is scheduled to begin in Atlanta in this summer, with 50 locations. The remaining company-owned restaurants will be completed over the next two years. In addition to equipment, Micros will supply services for training, installation and go-live support.
Triumfant gets into court
Triumfant Inc., of Rockville, a company that provides continuous monitoring and control software for Windows computers, announced that the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland has purchased Triumfant's Resolution Manager. The product automatically identifies and fixes problems in desktops, laptops and servers before the problems become service desk calls and adversely affect user productivity. Resolution Manager recommends fixes to each problem identified, and can be set to automatically remediate and alert IT management when the fix is complete.
More work for Fortress
Fortress International Group Inc., of Columbia, a provider of comprehensive services for the planning, design, development and maintenance of mission-critical facilities and information infrastructure, said it was awarded a contract to complete the upgrade of an existing laboratory facility at the University of Chicago to data center ready space. The project, valued at more than $2.8 million, includes adding and upgrading existing electrical and mechanical infrastructure systems to support the data center operation, as well as general construction work to secure the facility. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
Buildings change hands
The real estate investment group of Eaton Vance Management, a subsidiary of Boston-based investment management firm Eaton Vance Corp., announced that two investment funds it manages have each acquired an office building in Owings Mills, with a value for the combined transactions of approximately $95 million. The two- building office complex comprises approximately 390,000 square feet, and is leased on a long-term basis to a major mid-Atlantic health insurer.
Mobtown opens in Baltimore
Mobtown Studios, a new recording studio, announced the opening of its facility in Charles Village. Matthew and Emily Leffler Schulman said they were running a studio at their home in Washington, D.C., when they decided to move back to Baltimore, Emily's home town. Kadman, a Baltimore-based indie band, was one of the first to record at Mobtown. Mobtown Studios offers in-studio and remote recording services for music and commercial broadcast. Other services include mastering, mixing, producing and Web design. The studio will host an open house on July 24.
Massage studio in Timonium
Massage Envy, a new concept in therapeutic massage, announced it will hold its grand opening on July 21 at its Timonium location. The company was created in 2002 on the premise that massages should not only be relaxing, but also affordable and convenient. Massage Envy achieves this through a monthly membership plan that enables customers to have massages on a regular basis. Including the new location at 2442 Broad Ave. in Timonium, Massage Envy has 423 clinics operating in the United States, with additional clinics in development.
