Michael Schiller appointed president of Northwest Marine Terminals

Daily Journal of Commerce (Portland, OR), Feb 18, 2005 by Cody McCullough

The Port of Vancouver USA recently announced its operations manager, Michael Schiller, has been appointed as the president of the Northwest Marine Terminals Association.

The NMTA is a voluntary association of deepwater ports and marine terminal operators in Oregon and Washington, and provides authority for 13 member ports to set uniform rates, establish consistent rules and practices, exchange relevant information and pursue cooperative ventures.

Prior to joining the Port of Vancouver in 2002, Schiller served as a transportation officer in the United States Army for 20 years, where he was primarily involved in managing Department of Defense maritime facilities in Germany, Korea and the United States. Raised in Memphis, Tenn., Schiller received a bachelor's degree in ocean engineering from Florida Institute of Technology and a master's degree in logistics and transportation from the University of Tennessee.

Schiller currently serves as vice president of the Maritime Fire and Safety Association on the Columbia River and chairman of the American Association of Port Authorities' National Defense Committee. Schiller is also a member of the Transportation Research Board's Military Transportation Committee.

Since 1939, NMTA has operated under an agreement approved by the Federal Maritime Commission subject to provisions of Section 15 of the Shipping Act of 1916, the Shipping Act of 1984 and more recently the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998. The Ocean Shipping Reform Act continues the basic principles of anti-trust immunity for certain rate setting and other collective practices. Current NMTA members include the ports of Anacortes, Bellingham, Everett, Grays Harbor, Kalama, Longview, Olympia, Port Angeles, Seattle, Tacoma and Vancouver in Washington; and the ports of Astoria and Portland.
