University of Oregon launches product design degree program

The University of Oregon will make a product design degree program available to undergraduate students beginning in the fall of 2008.
The School of Architecture and Allied Arts program will award a four-year bachelor's degree and a five-year Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
The program will combine courses and studios in the humanities, cultural anthropology, business, art and architecture with specific coursework in product design,Columbia Sportwear, Ziba Design, Nike, Sandstrom Design and Intel will provide advice and internships for the program and will participate in joint projects.
Columbia Sportswear CEO Tim Boyle provided $1.5 million to launch the product design program. The gift will also establish an endowed chair in product design.
The school plans to accept 25 freshman and transfer students per year, with an eventual enrollment goal of 100. Students can apply for admission before Feb. 1, 2008.
