Portland plans National Bike Month events

Daily Journal of Commerce (Portland, OR),  Apr 30, 2008  by Report

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance on Friday will begin its Walk + Bike to School event on Main Street Plaza, along Portland's Eastbank Esplanade, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The BTA event is a spin- off of the 12-year-old Bicycle Commute Challenge, in which employees of companies compete against each other to bike the most miles to work.

The month-long event, which will pit about 5,000 Portland-area students and 30 schools against each other in a friendly competition, will correspond with a May 7 city-sponsored Bike to Work Celebration, which is meant to continue motivating people to use their bikes to get to work.

The city event, like its BTA counterpart, will be in celebration of National Bike Month and Bike to Work Week. Starting at Pioneer Place at 7:30 a.m., the event is one of many intended to inspire people to bike to work.
