Portland State University professor to discuss river development

Daily Journal of Commerce (Portland, OR), Aug 28, 2008

Portland State University professor of architecture and urban design Rudy Barton will give a lecture next week on the past and future development of the Willamette River as part of Riverfest, an 11-day event celebrating Portland's riverside.

The Sept. 5 lecture will be held at The McCall's Building, 1020 S.W. Naito Parkway, from 7 to 9 p.m. Barton will discuss challenges in developing the Willamette and demonstrate his idea of creating new 10-minute connections to the river, as well as presenting opportunities for creating more public spaces along Portland's riverbank.

Riverfest is being sponsored by city organizations such as the Willamette River Fund, River Renaissance, Port of Portland and Metro, among others. The goal of the event is to engage the community in improving river ecosystems and to promote increased economic activity at the riverfront. It begins today and ends Sept. 7.
