Lake Oswego firm signs deal to build 10 new barges
Daily Journal of Commerce (Portland, OR), Oct 2, 2008
The Greenbrier Cos. of Lake Oswego recently signed a contract with Vessel Management Services to have its Gunderson Marine Division in Portland build 10 heavy lift series deck cargo barges.
Gunderson previously built 40 vessels for Crowley Maritime Corp., which owns Vessel Management. The new barges will measure 400 feet long and 105 feet wide. Equipped with a massive deck-loading capability, the barges will be used for construction, salvage, oil and gas development, and container transportation. The barges will also handle project work for the offshore energy industry in the Gulf of Mexico.
Gunderson has been a ship and barge builder since 1942, and also works in the freight car construction market.
Greenbrier is a transportation equipment supplier and also builds new railroad freight cars.
