St. Louis-based Alberici Constructors completes installation of wind
St. Louis Daily Record & St. Louis Countian, Feb 4, 2005 by St. Louis Daily Record Staff
On Monday, Jan. 17, Alberici Constructors assembled and placed a three-blade rotor, which spans 52 feet in diameter, atop a monopole that rises 124-feet above the landscape to complete the installation of its wind turbine.
The turbine is situated 150 feet from the busy I-170 corridor on the campus of Alberici's new headquarters. The structure is supported by a foundation ring containing nine tons of rebar and 220 yards of concrete.
The wind turbine's maximum capacity is 65 kilowatts. This is what it will generate if there is enough wind for the machine to operate at full tilt. The estimated annual kilowatt hours generated by the turbine is expected to be somewhere around 80,000-kilowatt hours - excluding miscellaneous or plug loads - 80,000- kilowatt hours Alberici is not buying off the power grid. The estimated reduction in energy costs for Alberici is expected to be between 19 percent and 20 percent annually.
Alberici built its new corporate headquarters by transforming an existing metal-covered industrial building into a 110,000-square- foot facility. The project used green concepts throughout the design and construction to significantly reduce negative impact on the environment, conserve natural resources and enhance the quality of work life for the building's occupants.
Alberici has registered the project with the U.S. Green Building Council to be measured by their metric rating system called Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design. Alberici is aiming to achieve Platinum LEED certification, which the USGBC will determine. Currently, there are only a handful of Platinum-certified buildings in the world. Final certification for Alberici's headquarters will be announced in spring 2005.
Alberici employees moved into the new green headquarters in early December 2004.
