Hints on cleaning silver jewelry

Dear Heloise: I've read your hint on cleaning diamond and gold jewelry, but I need directions on cleaning silver jewelry. Any info you can share -- A Woman Who Loves Wearing Silver, via e-mail

Of course, and here's some great info from my friends at the Jewelers of America Inc.

Sterling-silver jewelry does tarnish, but not to worry -- you can remove the tarnish by using a paste or liquid silver polish. If you prefer, a polishing cloth that is specially treated and made for cleaning silver can be used.

Another way is to wash silver in warm water and rub in a little bit of soap or a gel-type toothpaste -- one that is not gritty. Rinse well, then pat dry using a clean, soft cloth.

Do not use paper towels or tissues, which can contain fibers that scratch fine silver.

Caution: Only use on those pieces that can be submerged in water - - don't use this on a silver watch or jewelry with other stones that should not be cleaned this way. When in doubt, go to a professional.

The Jewelers of America Inc. has once again graciously offered an informative brochure titled What You Should Know About Sterling Silver Jewelry and Gifts. It contains lots of information on silver, including purchasing, caring for it and storing it properly. You can receive one free copy of this helpful brochure by calling 1-800-223- 0673. -- Heloise

Dear Heloise: I use a small napkin holder (cheaper than those office things) to organize bills. As the bills come in, I mark the amount due, the due date and the date I want to mail the payment on the front of the envelope. The bills are then placed in the napkin holder in mailing-date order. It takes almost no more space than the envelopes and can be placed wherever it's convenient. No late mailings. -- G.B., Winnsboro, Texas
