Salt Lake police detectives plan to talk to the mother of a toddler who tested positive for methamphetamine in his system.

The baby's grandmother picked up the 22-month-old boy Saturday night and told police the mother was acting strangely, as if she was under the influence of a drug, Salt Lake police detective Dwayne Baird said.

The grandmother took the baby to her house, but she could not get him to sleep. He was fussy and anxious all night. At 5:30 a.m. Sunday, she took him to Primary Children's Medical Center, Baird said.

Doctors ran tests and determined the baby had meth in his system, Baird said.

It is unknown how the drug got into the baby's system. Merely being in the presence of a meth lab can expose a person to the chemicals and sludge that's part of the process of manufacturing the drug, Baird said.

Police were unsure of the mother's whereabouts Sunday night, Baird said.
