Hatch undergoes back surgery again

WASHINGTON -- For the second time in six months, Sen. Orrin Hatch has undergone back surgery.

Adam Elggren, his press secretary, said Wednesday's surgery in Washington was to repair a herniated disk. The operation was deemed a success by his doctor.

The surgery comes during a weeklong recess in the Senate, so Hatch, R-Utah, is not missing any votes or Senate work for now. Elggren said Hatch hopes not to miss any Senate votes.

Hatch had similar surgery in September and returned to work almost immediately -- in part to help former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, who was facing a confirmation hearing at the time for his new job as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Hatch has suffered back problems for years, which he has said were aggravated by an auto accident. He received some press attention in the past for seeking alternative medicine to treat his back with an osteopathic physician.
