Is new district needed?

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Apr 1, 2004

The proposed separation of Lehi, Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs from Alpine School District is one of the topics that are causing a stir in northern Utah County. Some citizens and politicians in the area are spearheading the proposed creation of the new Lehi area district.

Before anyone hurries to jump on the new district bandwagon, some questions must be asked:

Will the quality of education improve for the children in the new district?

What will the property tax liability be for the average citizen within the new district?

Will we lose good, experienced teachers to more desirable jobs elsewhere?

These and many more questions need to be addressed, and our leaders on both sides of the debate have a responsibility to inform the voters on facts, not politics.

Before we decide to create a new school district, is the status quo with Alpine School District really broken? Or is this a power trip for a few leaders and citizens with agendas more personal than practical?
