John McKamey, whose company, Garage Spaces (www.garagespaces.com), specializes in storage and organizational systems for garages, offers the following poison safety list for garages and storage areas:

-- Are hazardous products -- such as paint thinner, weed killers, pesticides and antifreeze -- packaged with child-resistant caps?

-- Are all hazardous products kept in original containers with labels (and warnings) intact?

-- Do you always read precautions before use and follow safety recommendations during and after use?

-- Do you wear protective gear (goggles and chemical-resistant gloves) when working with toxic products?

-- Do you immediately clean the area after automotive repairs or projects such as furniture stripping?

-- Do you regularly rid your home safely and legally of hazardous chemicals through local government disposal programs? Check with your county's health department.

-- Are your gas appliances regularly checked for safety?
