Dorothy Gilleland Mathews passed away Friday, June 11, 2004 at a Waco nursing home.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19 at First Baptist Church in Waco with Dr. Scott Walker officiating. A private burial service will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Dottie was born July 6, 1936 in Edinburg, Texas. She lived in Corpus Christi until her marriage to Paul C. Mathews in 1957. She received her BA degree from Baylor University and her MA degree in Guidance and Counseling from Inter-American University. Dottie was a substitute teacher and volunteer worker in several states. She faithfully traveled with her husband throughout his military and civilian careers, finally locating in Waco, where he assumed command of the Air Force ROTC at Baylor University in 1976. While living in Waco, Dottie was a member of the First Baptist Church, P.E.O., Baylor University Roundtable, and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a lifetime member of the Hillcrest Baptist Hospital Auxiliary and Baylor Alumni Association.

Dottie's life was dedicated to Christ and she was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Dottie felt strongly that we are our brother's keepers and she felt that her friends were special gifts from God.

Dottie was preceded in death by her father, Roy Raymond Gilleland, by her mother, Dorothy Ray Gilleland, and by her sister, Linda Beth Gilleland. She is survived by her husband, Lt. Col. Paul Carlton Mathews USAF (Ret.) of Waco, Texas, and by her daughter Beth Mathews Beckwith and her husband Paul Beckwith of Sydney, Australia. Dottie is also survived by a brother, Rick Gilleland and his wife Pat of Houston, and by a sister, Cathie Dillard and her husband Steve, also of Houston. Other survivors include a niece, Shawn Dillard Bergfeld, and her husband Andy, and nephews Bart Gilleland, Brannon Dillard, John Goodwin and Andrew and George Bergfeld. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Leah Fontaine, and her husband Joe Fontaine, and their son Joe Fontaine and cousins, Robin Ray Sandoval, Ken Gilleland, Jerry Labarba, and Judy Gilbreath.

Dottie will be deeply missed by her family and by many loving friends.
