Timpview High senior shooting guard Matt Mortenson verbally committed over the weekend to play basketball for Marquette University. He said he'll officially sign a letter of intent in November.

Mortenson, at 6-foot-5, has great leaping ability and also has excellent shooting range. He said he was recruited by several schools during the summer but narrowed his choices to Marquette and BYU, where he likely would have been asked to walk on.

He visited the Marquette campus in Milwaukee last Thursday through Sunday and let coach Tom Crean know Sunday morning that he wanted to be part of his basketball program. Mortenson said he selected Marquette because he feels his chances of being successful in Crean's program are better.

"He runs an excellent program and the facilities there are top notch," Mortenson said. "It's also an excellent school and the kind of place where I think I'll fit in well."

Playing with first-team All-staters Chris Miles and Matt Pinegar last season, Mortenson averaged about 10 points per game for the Thunderbirds.
