Libbie Baxter Maughan peacefully returned to her Heavenly Father on September 24, 2004. At 92 years of age her body was worn, but her mind remained alert and her concern for others never faltered.
She was the loving mother of Annette M. Smith (Carlos), the proud grandmother of Scott Carlos Smith (Wendy), Michael Maughan Smith (Ruth), Alison S. Wirthlin (David), and Andrea S. Sheets (James). She considered her 17 great-grandchildren the most precious in the world. Libbie's devoted siblings are Dean Haslam Baxter and Lydia B. Willmore.

Libbie was born in Mt. Sterling, Utah November 6, 1911, to Robert Lawrence and Sarah Haslam Baxter. She attended elementary school in Wellsville and then South Cache High School. During high school, her family moved to Logan where she graduated from Logan High School. She has always cherished friendships made at both of these high schools. Education has always been of value to Libbie. She worked her way through college, graduating from Utah State University in 1934. She married LeMoine B. Maughan June 20, 1934. He died in January 1992.
Her secretarial career extended to 38 years of service to Utah State University Extension. She worked as secretary to five directors of Extension. Following retirement, Libbie enjoyed playing golf with LeMoine and their friends. The year she retired she hit a hole-in- one at the Logan Golf and Country Club.
After retiring Libbie worked part time in the Biology Department at Utah State University and at Roskelley's where they met many lifetime friends.
In March 2004, she was the recipient of an award from the USU Women's Center honoring women over 65. The award was given in recognition for her professional achievements and contributions to the community.
Libbie was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as YWMIA President, Sunday School teacher, and Social Relations instructor in Relief Society. Until recently she served as a visiting teacher in her ward.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, LeMoine B. Maughan and her great-granddaughter, Marie Elizabeth Smith, her parents Robert Lawrence and Sarah Haslam Baxter, and her siblings Lonnie and Yon Baxter, Sylvia B. Fames, and Ann B. Lund.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, October 1, 2004, at the Hillcrest Second Ward Chapel, 875 North 1500 East in Logan. A viewing will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary on Thursday evening, September 30, 2004, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and also at the church prior to services from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery.
