Ski school moves into 2nd day

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Dec 2, 2004

The first session of the 57th Deseret Morning News' Ski and Snowboard School went off as scheduled, thanks to a series of storms that gave skiers a perfect snowbase to slide on.

The second class will be Saturday -- skiers will head to Alta and snowboarders to Snowbird.

Classes will start forming between 9 and 9:30 a.m.

Students are advised to dress warmly. The weather forecast is predicting partially cloudy conditions.

The final class will be Dec. 11.

The $25 fee included registration, a total of three two-hour lesson, instruction from a certified instructor and, "when they're ready, access to a chairlift," said Sharon Johnson, marketing director at the Deseret Morning News.

"I don't know of a less expensive way of learning to ski or snowboard. Over the 56 years, a lot of people have learned. A lot of those people who do ski and snowboard now got their start in the Deseret Morning News' ski school."

Since this is a school for entry-level or beginning students, instruction is intended to get would-be skiers and snowboarders past the fears of not knowing what to do and to a point where they will be able to negotiate beginner slopes with confidence.

Some students will be able to ride a chairlift for the first time this Saturday. Others will be able to learn how to take a seat on a moving lift during the final class.
