Utahns to the left — on roads

Deseret News (Salt Lake City),  Jun 1, 2005

Years ago, I remember reading an article in the Deseret News to the effect that Utahns consistently voted for one political party for our congressional delegation and the other for our governor. The article went on to explain that this practice appeared to be a type of psychological check and balance on our political leanings in the state.

Obviously, we have gotten away from that practice in recent years. However, we citizens have hit upon a much more clever way of offsetting our far-right political leanings and assuaging our conscience. We have taken to driving to the far left on the freeway.

In this show of individuality, we are demonstrating to the rest of the world that we are not merely a nation of passive sheep here in this, the "pretty, great state" of Utah, but that we really can do something to the left of center.
