French concerts to kick off year

The Utah Symphony will get off to a French start in the new year with an all-French program that will include not only French masterpieces but a French conductor and French guest pianist.

On Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in Abravanel Hall, Jean-Claude Casadesus will lead the orchestra in performances of Ravel's Bolero, Bizet's Symphony No. 1 and selections from Bizet's "Carmen." Guest pianist Jean-Phillipe Collard will be featured as soloist for Saint- Sah program will signal not only the beginning of the new year but also a two-month cultural festival with the Utah Symphony and Opera titled la vie Parisienne.

In partnership with the Utah Humanities Council, the University of Utah College of Humanities and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the festival will feature a complete presentation of French art forms, including visual, symphonic, operatic and cinematic disciplines.
