Senate OKs measure tightening seat-belt law

A bill that would tighten Utah's seat-belt laws received final approval Wednesday in the Senate. The measure passed 15-10 and will now go to the House for a vote.

Under SB98, motorists age 19 and older could be ticketed just for not wearing a seat belt, making it a primary offense. Currently, not buckling up is a secondary offense, meaning that another offense must be committed first before a motorist can be pulled over and ticketed for a seat belt violation.

The measure is sponsored by Sen. Karen Hale, D- Salt Lake City. This is the fourth year Hale has run the measure. It has received Senate approval the past two years, but has failed each time in the House.
