Utah Valley

TRACK: The Wolverines finished third at the Independent track championships last weekend at Northern Colorado. The men finished in fourth at the two-day meet. Karinne Bentley finished second in the 1,500 by running a time of 4 minutes, 47.02 seconds. Joe Bendoski placed first (3:58.00) and freshman Tim Rowberry was fourth (4:01.19) in the 1,500.

SOFTBALL: For the third straight year UVSC softball player Rachel Hartgrove was named to the first-team All-Independent Team. Hartgrove is one of only two players to accomplish this. This year Hartgrove finished her four-year Wolverine career with a .364 average, seven home runs, 30 RBIs and a .609 slugging percentage.

Utah State

TRACK: DJ Smith won the 100 meters, Trever Ball won the 5,000 meters and Clinton Silcock won the high jump to lead Utah State's men's track and field team to a second-place finish at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference championships in Hawaii late Saturday. Utah State's women's team was led by Amber Judd, who finished second in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles as the Aggies finished in third-place.

SOFTBALL: All-conference, all-tournament and now All-West Region. University of Utah softball second baseman Jackie Wong can add first- team all-region accolades to her bevy of honors for the 2005 season.

The senior from Antioch, Calif., has been named to the 2006 Louisville Slugger/NFCA first team All-Region team. Wong led the team, the conference and ranked among the tops in the nation in batting all season long. Currently, the leadoff hitter smacks the ball around at a .448 clip. She leads the team with 86 hits, six of which are triples.

Wong is eyeing the school's single-season batting mark. The record has stood since 1994 when Amy Timmel hit an impressive .455 for the season.

VOLLEYBALL: Utah volleyball head coach Beth Launiere has announced the signing of Chelsey Sandberg to a National letter-of- intent. The 6-foot-1 middle blocker comes to Utah after playing high school volleyball at Copper Hills High School.

"Chelsey is a great athlete and volleyball talent," said Launiere. "She is relatively new to the sport so she has tremendous upside to her game. Chelsey can potentially be one of the best blockers to play for Utah because of her athletic ability. We're extremely excited to have her join our program."
