Youths showcased in 3 theater productions

Deseret News (Salt Lake City),  Jul 23, 2006  by Ivan M. Lincoln Deseret Morning News

Young people are showcased in three new productions opening this week in Salt Lake City, Logan and Springville.

-- "GREASE," the popular rock 'n' roll musical about high school in the 1950s, will be presented Thursday through Aug. 3 by the Grand Theatre Summer Conservatory, an intensive, six-week summer-stock performance camp for serious high school theater students. This is the original Broadway version, not the scaled-down "school edition."

Directed by Kyle Lewis, who is assisted by the conservatory's artistic director Colleen Lewis, the cast includes Sarah Young as Sandy, Robert Fletcher as Danny, Allison Robbins as Rizzo, Tyson Smith as Keneckie and Cindy Stephens as Frenchy, with Timothy Lang as Vince Fontaine and Jayme Terran as Miss Lynch. Rowland Butler is choreographer with musical direction by Jay Gunderson.

Performances are Thursday and Friday this week and July 31 and Aug. 1-3 at 7 p.m. in the Grand Theatre, on Salt Lake Community College's South City campus, 1575 S. State. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens (957-3322 or www.the- grand.org).

-- "STORY THEATRE," Paul Sills' compilation of fairy tales and fables by the Grimm Brothers and Aesop, is the 2006 family show developed for the Old Lyric Repertory Company's Apprentice Program. Co-director Tracie Norton, who is also the project's apprentice coordinator, says the show is comprised of "fractured fairy tales presented in a non-traditional way."

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays through Aug. 1 in the Caine Lyric Theatre, 28 W. Center, Logan. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children (435-752-1500).

-- "LES MISERABLES: THE SCHOOL EDITION," directed by Gavin Grooms and featuring accompaniment by a live orchestra, will be staged Friday through Aug. 12 on Thursdays-Saturdays and Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in the Art City Playhouse, 254 S. Main, Springville. The ensemble is comprised of youths from throughout Utah County.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students, senior citizens and children (735-4543 or www.artcityplayhouse.com
