Romero assailed over 'U' flier

Republicans are accusing Democratic state Senate candidate Ross Romero of a "breach of ethics" after he sent out a campaign brochure this weekend that twice features the University of Utah's block U logo and a quote from former U. President Bernie Machen.

The front of the brochure contains the words, "It's Important To U," featuring a large white block U against a red background. A quote from Machen inside calls Romero, who is a U. graduate, a "strong advocate" for the U. community. On the facing page developer Kem Gardner, former Utah first lady Norma Matheson and former U. professor J.D. Williams recommend that people vote for Romero.

"His actions are completely unacceptable, and Ross owes the alumni an apology," said James Evans, chairman of the Salt Lake County Republican Party. Evans said in a news release that the brochure displays a misuse of the U. logo.

University officials Saturday issued a one-sentence statement that said the U. does not endorse political candidates.

Romero in a phone interview echoed the U. statement.

"We didn't intend for it to be a campaign endorsement for the university," he said.

Romero pointed out how under the mailing address on the brochure it says, "Paid for and authorized by the Committee to Elect Ross Romero," followed by the Web address, www.romero4senate7.com

"It was really just meant to be an expression of my loyalty and support for the University of Utah," he said. "It seems a bit odd that the Republicans or whoever are upset about it."
