Utah

FOOTBALL: The University of Utah football program now has two early recruiting commitments. Zach Davila, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive lineman from Cienega High School near Tucson, Ariz., plans to sign a letter of intent with the Utes next February. He joins defensive back Lamar Chapman of El Camino Community College (Calif.) in announcing plans to enroll at Utah in 2008.

GYMNASTICS: The University of Utah gymnastics squad will open the 2008 season on Jan. 11 against its nemesis Georgia, the three-time defending NCAA champion. The Utes, who placed second to the Bulldogs at the NCAA Championships in April, will also host another Super Six finalist, Nebraska, on Jan. 18. Other teams on Utah's 2008 home schedule include Minnesota on Feb. 1, Utah State and Southern Utah on Feb. 22, Oregon State on March 7 and BYU on March 28. Utah State

TRACK: Utah State track athletes Kat Duhadway, Jennifer Twitchell and Vance Twitchell were named to the All-District academic teams. Duhadway and Jennifer Twitchell both earned second-team All- District honors, while Vance Twitchell was named to the first-team and is now eligible for Academic All-America honors.

VOLLEYBALL: Utah State's women's volleyball coach Grayson DuBose announced Thursday the signing of Christine Morrill to a national letter of intent to compete for the Aggies beginning in the 2007 season. Morrill, a 5-foot-7 libero from Union High in Roosevelt, earned first-team all-state honors as a senior and plays for the High Country Volleyball Club that has qualified for the Junior Olympic National Championships this summer.

Southern Utah

TRACK: Southern Utah senior Jess Baumgartner was named to the academic All-District team, the first SUU track and field athlete so honored. The Cedar City native recently graduated with a 3.89 GPA in chemistry.

Weber State

TRACK: Four members of the Weber State men's and women's track and field teams have been named to the ESPN academic All-District teams. Seniors Lindsey Anderson (3.51 GPA) and Heidi Bouwhuis (3.82 GPA )received the honor, while juniors Bret Ferrier (3.97 GPA) and Seth Pilkington (3.71 GPA) were named to the men's team. All four athletes will now be placed on the national Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced later in June.

Utah Valley

WRESTLING: Utah Valley head wrestling coach Greg Williams announced the signing of Mitch Sanderson to a national letter of intent to wrestle for the Wolverines next year. Sanderson, who prepped at Pleasant Grove High, was a two-time Utah state champion for the Vikings. Sanderson comes from a successful wrestling family. His father, Kelly and uncle, Steve Sanderson, both wrestled collegiately at BYU.
