Ex-S.L. County counselor waives burglary hearing

A crime-victim counselor who formerly worked in the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office waived her right to a preliminary hearing in a criminal case against her on Thursday.

Xan Kali, 40, is charged with second-degree felony burglary, as well as criminal mischief and obtaining property by unlawful conduct, both third-degree felonies.

The charges stem from incidents on July 1, 2006, in which Kali and four other people allegedly broke into a Sandy home, stole and used a credit card to buy clothing. They also are accused of trying to smash a safe by dropping it out a second-story window, which damaged a car that was below, and damaging the house.

The vacationing homeowner, alerted by his credit-card company about unusual purchases, called police. The next day, police found Kali and the others inside the house, according to prosecutors.

The Davis County Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case to avoid any potential conflict of interest because Kali once worked for Salt Lake County prosecutors.
