Hockey

GRIZZLIES SIGNING: The Utah Grizzlies, affiliate of the New York Islanders, have signed all-star defenseman Andy Sertich to a contract for the 2007-08 season. The announcement was made by coach/ hockey operations director Jason Christie.

During his rookie season last year, Sertich had seven goals and led the team with 40 assists for 47 points, playing in all 72 games. He led the Grizzlies in scoring over the final 42 games with six goals and 32 assists.

"It's a big relief to be going back to Utah," said Sertich. "I love the area and am very comfortable with the organization. Coach Christie is committed to excellence and winning; we look forward to contending this season."

Football

Phil Glover, a former Utah star, has just been named AFL's Ironman of the Week for the Conference Championship round of the playoffs.

Glover, in his fifth AFL season, recorded one two-yard touchdown reception and one rush for two yards on offense. On defense, Glover registered two-and-a-half tackles as San Jose's defense held the Rush to 14 first-half points en route to the 61-49 victory. He recorded five rushing attempts for three yards and two touchdowns, two receptions for seven yards and two touchdowns, and registering six tackles and two sacks in the post-season. Glover and the San Jose SaberCats will host the Columbus Destroyers in ArenaBowl XXI New Orleans on Saturday, July 29, at 3:00 ET on ESPN on ABC.

Utah State

TRACK AND FIELD: Utah State's women' track team was recognized for its academic excellence as it received the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic Award for having the fourth-best overall grade-point average in the country. As a team, Utah State' women had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.440 during the 2007 spring semester, tying Bradley University for fourth-best in the country. Arkansas-Little Rock led the nation with a 3.61 GPA, followed by Quinnipiac (3.518), Tennessee-Chattanooga (3.460), and USU and Bradley.

FOOTBALL: Utah State' football coaching staff will host a free football clinic for women to learn football skills and techniques at Romney Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The clinic, which runs from 6 to 8 p.m., is for all women 18 years and older.

Admission is free.

ALUM MILESTONE: Former Utah State quarterback and current Montreal Alouettes signal-caller Anthony Calvillo became the fourth QB in Canadian Football League history to pass for 50,000 yards, reaching the milestone in Saturday's win over Hamilton. Calvillo, a native of Los Angeles who played at USU from 1992-93, still holds the Aggies' single-season total offense school record of 3,260 yards. Calvillo holds several Alouette records, including most career touchdown passes, pass attempts and pass completions.
