Josephine Mix Kasteler

1914 ~ 2007

Josephine Mix Kasteler passed away peacefully August 2, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 11, 1914 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Albert Ernest and Blanche Spence Mix. Married John I. Kasteler October 17, 1937 (later divorced). Graduated from Cyprus High School, 1932. Earned Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees from the University of Utah. Faculty member of the School of Medicine for 25 years, deputy director of the Gerontology Center at the College of Nursing for eight years, at the University of Utah. She was an instructor at the BYU Salt Lake Center evening classes for 26 years. She was awarded emeritus status in Family Preventive Medicine in 1987, University of Utah, and distinguished service awards at both universities. She was the first recipient of the Utah Gerontological Society Pioneer award.

Member of the LDS Church actively involved in Relief Society and Sunday School organizations. Held numerous official positions in academic and community organizations and on advisory boards, governmental, and legislative committees. Worked specifically to improve conditions for the elderly. Devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, compassionate friend, avid reader, helpful wherever a need was detected.

Survivors include children, John I. Kasteler, Jr. (Sharon), Elise Kasteler Hutchings, Richard Mix Kasteler (Elaine), Steven G. Kasteler, David R. Kasteler (Zoe); Mary Cannon Mix, sister-in-law, all Salt Lake City, Utah; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and their families. Preceded in death by parents, two sisters, one brother, a grandchild, and son- in-law.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2007, 12 noon at the Holladay 4th Ward, 4917 So. Viewmont St. (2085 E.). Visitation at the Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Dr. Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday at the church from 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Holladay Memorial Park.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Sarah Daft Home for taking such good care of Mom in her last few months. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Josephine Kasteler Scholarship, University of Utah College of Nursing, 25 South Medical Dr., SLC, UT.
