Tipping system antiquated

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Mar 27, 2008

It is time to do away with the antiquated system of paying tips when eating out. Let me say I have no problem in raising the price of meals in order to compensate for the loss of tips -- money to the servers, not the owners. I was taught many years ago that "tips" were "to insure prompt service" (T.I.P.S.). That is no longer the case. It doesn't matter whether I pay 10 percent or 30 percent, the food doesn't come any faster nor is it any better. So why do we continue? It is past the time we should be trying to calculate the magical percentage deemed acceptable by today's norms.
