Convicted sex offender arrested by FBI agents

Deseret News (Salt Lake City),  May 7, 2008

FBI agents have arrested a convicted sex offender who they believe dropped an mp3 player containing child porn in a Salt Lake restaurant.

Paul Lawrence Briggs, 58, was arrested Tuesday afternoon "at a local store," according to a statement from the FBI.

Agents believe Briggs was at Denny's restaurant, 250 W. 500 South, Monday when he dropped an mp3 player as he walked inside. A customer saw the discarded device and turned it over to the manager, the FBI stated.

The manager noticed there were three micro memory cards attached to the mp3. When he discovered the cards contained child pornography, he called police.

Surveillance video from the restaurant broadcast by local media generated a tip to the FBI that resulted in Briggs' arrest Tuesday.

Court records show Briggs has a fairly lengthy criminal history, including a 1998 conviction of attempted sex abuse of a child, a third-degree felony. Two other identical counts were dismissed in exchange for a guilty plea on the one count.

Briggs was arrested Tuesday by the FBI on an active warrant of failing to register as a sex offender.
