Technicals not foul for Bryce Valley
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), May 8, 2008
Bryce Valley girls basketball coach Tyson Brinkerhoff was slapped with four technical fouls in his team's 58-37 win over Escalante Tuesday night. It had nothing to do with an outburst against the refs, though. Because the game against the 0-10 Moquis got out of hand score-wise early, he ended up playing 20 different girls. Four of the players weren't on the varsity roster, so he got T'd up for letting them play.
"We could have won by 50, but what does that accomplish? It was a good experience," he said. "The starters didn't like that very much. They have defensive goals. They didn't want them to score over that. It was my fault. It's kind of a rarity to be able to do something like that."
Ram tough
South Sevier is making it pretty clear it intends to be Region 12 boys basketball champion once again. The Rams kicked off region play last week with three victories in four days -- including a 96-27 thrashing of Grand and a 61-49 victory over previously unbeaten San Juan.
Quotable
"I wish we could've stopped at the end of the third, I would've felt a lot better about things. Now I'll go home and lose all my sleep over a quarter of the game." -- Viewmont boys basketball coach Jeff Emery, on his team allowing Weber to cut a 27-point deficit to nine points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's game.
Boys basketball: West
Don't look now, but the Panthers suddenly look like they could be the team to beat in Region 6. West tipped off region play with wins over Cottonwood, Murray and East to put the team over .500 and in a first place tie with Granger.
Boys basketball: Taylor Brown
The Alta senior is heating up -- and just in time for region play. Brown scored 21 points in the Hawks' near upset of Lone Peak last week, then had 16 points in Alta's blow-out victory over American Fork.
Boys basketball: Neal Monson
He's only a sophomore at Waterford, but Monson is putting up senior-like numbers. Monson is averaging a double-double with 19.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.
Girls basketball: East
The Leopards have gotten back on track since losing to Sky View in mid-December. East has posted four consecutive wins and shown great balance during its streak. Three players have led the team in scoring in those four wins -- Lauren Porter, Sherale Singer and LaToya Utuone.
Girls basketball: Megan Clyde
Clyde, a junior at Hurricane, has been steady all season for the Tigers. She leads 3A in scoring with an 18.2 points per game average, and has helped Hurricane to an 8-3 overall record and a No. 4 ranking.
