Firefighters extinguish blaze at cement plant

Deseret News (Salt Lake City),  May 8, 2008  by Associated Press

CROYDON, Morgan County -- Firefighters have extinguished a two- alarm fire at a cement plant.

The fire was reported about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, when workers noticed smoke and flames. Firefighters from Morgan, Mountain Green and South Ogden responded to help fight the fire.

Morgan Fire Chief Dave Rich said the fire was in a building used to store recycled paper and other things used in their kiln operation.

"It got hot enough we had some damage to the structural framing, which is steel inside," Rich said. "There was some bending and twisting of stuff."

The fire took about 25 minutes to put out. At first, Rich said they thought the fire was suspicious. After an investigator for the state fire marshal's office toured the scene, he said they have determined the fire to be accidental.

The plant continues to operate.
