New entry deadline is July 3 for first Nauvoo Quilt Festival

Registration has been extended to July 3 to enter the first Nauvoo Quilt Festival.

The event will be held July 11 and 12 at the Nauvoo Elementary School on Mulholland Street in Nauvoo, Ill. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 11 and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on July 12. An awards presentation will be held at 4:30 p.m. on July 12.

Quilters are invited to enter their work to be displayed during the festival.

The event will include exhibitors from the U.S. and Canada; hands- on make-it-and-take-it projects led by manufacturers, retailers, designers and teachers; lectures; displays; and demonstrations. Presenters will include quilt designer and instructor Annie Smith, and writer and quilter Denise Felt. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate "the rich history of quilting within Nauvoo and the surrounding regions," according the the festival's Web site.

Monument dedication is June 21

The Holladay Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers will dedicate a monument commemorating the farm home of President Wilford Woodruff at 1604 S. 500 East in Salt Lake City. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. June 21.

President Woodruff, the fourth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was one of the original pioneers to enter the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and built a farm in the area around 1700 South and 1300 East. He was the leader of the LDS Church who signed the Manifesto, which ended the practice of polygamy.

The Sons of Utah Pioneers, organized in 1933, is a service organization with more than 2,200 members dedicated to preserving the history of Utah and the pioneers.

Show seeking 'modest' models

Models are being sought for "A Modest Proposal" fashion show, which will take place June 28 at 7 p.m. at South Towne Mall. Models will be selected based on their answer to an essay question. Design submissions are also being sought, and the winning sketch will be created and debuted at the fashion show. Submissions will be accepted from girls and women age 13 and older. Essays should be approximately 200 words and address the question, "How do the clothes I wear reflect my inner beauty?" Please include name, age, height, address and phone number with a current head shot. Winners will be chosen as models for the fashion show. The entry deadline for essays and sketches is June 14. Camp plans anniversary party

Oakcrest, a girls camp that serves 92 stakes in the Salt Lake Valley, is celebrating its 50th year of operation this summer.
