Teixeira has 3-homer day
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Jun 23, 2008 by Associated Press
ATLANTA -- Mark Teixeira homered three times, connecting from both sides of the plate to lead the Atlanta Braves over the Seattle Mariners 8-3 on Sunday.
Teixeira hit solo drives batting left-handed in the second and fourth innings, and a two-run shot from the right side in the seventh for his 13th homer of the season. It was his second career three-homer game and the first for an Atlanta player at Turner Field.
Tim Hudson (8-5) allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 2.96 and finally win an interleague game with Atlanta. Before Sunday, Hudson was 0-10 with a 7.82 ERA in 12 interleague starts with the Braves. He was 0-3 with an 11.25 ERA against AL West teams.
Brian McCann followed Teixeira's fourth-inning homer with a drive over the center-field wall against Carlos Silva (3-9), who left after the inning and allowed four runs and nine hits.
Jeff Clement hit a two-run homer off Mike Gonzalez in Seattle's three-run ninth. Gonzalez was making his second appearance in his return from elbow ligament-replacement surgery.
RED SOX 5, CARDINALS 3 (13): At Boston, Kevin Youkilis hit a two- run home run off of Mike Parisi in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift Boston over St. Louis. Mike Lowell led off the inning with a single off Parisi (0-3) before Youkilis hit Parisi's 3-1 offering over the left-field wall. It was Youkilis's second homer of the game. The Red Sox avoided being swept in a series at home for the first time since losing two contests to the Blue Jays last April.
The Cardinals had a chance to take the lead in the top of the 13th off Javier Lopez (2-0), but Chris Duncan was thrown out at home plate by Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew.
Aaron Miles went 5-for-6 for the Cardinals and was 7-for-11 in the series with his only homer of the season. Despite the loss, the Cardinals won their sixth consecutive road series.
ANGELS 3, PHILLIES 2: At Philadelphia, Jered Weaver held Philadelphia in check into the sixth inning, Casey Kotchman homered and Los Angeles beat the Phillies to complete a three-game sweep. Weaver (7-7) allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings for the AL West-leading Angels, who have won eight of their last nine road games and are a major league-best 24-12 on the road this season.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth for his major league-leading 30th save in 32 opportunities.
Cole Hamels (7-5) gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings for the Phillies, who have lost five straight and seven of nine.
Philadelphia has lost four straight series since it swept the Braves in Atlanta.
CUBS 7, WHITE SOX 1: At Chicago, Ryan Dempster won his ninth straight this season at Wrigley Field and Eric Patterson and Aramis Ramirez homered in the same inning for the Cubs, who beat their crosstown rivals to finish a three-game sweep. The Cubs, the owners of the best record in the majors (48-28), won their 14th straight home game to go 32-8 at Wrigley Field this season.
Dempster (9-2), who moved from closer back to starter this season, allowed 10 hits and a run in eight-plus innings, leaving after giving up back-to-back singles in the ninth. He walked one and struck out four.
Patterson, who recorded three hits Saturday when he was recalled from the minors, hit his first major league homer.
YANKEES 4, REDS 1: At New York, Andy Pettitte put the Yankees back on track, running his shutout streak to 19 innings and helping New York avoid a three-game sweep with a victory over Cincinnati. Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 601st home run, but the Reds are still looking for their first three-game road sweep since last July at Atlanta.
Jason Giambi had a two-run double and Robinson Cano snapped a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, sending the Yankees to their 13th win in 18 games. They lost reliever Kyle Farnsworth to injury, however, when he tried to barehand Brandon Phillips' infield single in the eighth.
Mariano Rivera came on and got four outs for his 21st save in 21 chances.
Pettitte (8-5) tossed six innings of four-hit ball, handing Reds rookie Johnny Cueto (5-8) a hard-luck loss. Both departed following a rain delay in the middle of the sixth.
ROYALS 11, GIANTS 10: At Kansas City, Mo., Mike Aviles had three RBIs and Joey Gathright drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, capping an eight-run comeback that gave Kansas City a thrilling win over San Francisco. Seven different Royals drove in runs, including a pair of RBIs from David DeJesus, as Kansas City belted out 14 hits. The comeback matched the second-best in Royals history, after a nine-run rally on June 15, 1979, at Milwaukee.
The Giants had ace Tim Lincecum on the mound and a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Royals scored two in the inning on Jose Guillen's single and Alex Gordon's sacrifice fly, then sent 11 batters to the plate in a five-run sixth that tied it up.
Left-hander Ron Mahay (3-0) worked two hitless innings to pick up the victory, and Joakim Soria worked the ninth for his 20th save in 21 opportunities.
