Word 'socialism' misused

Regarding the recent spate of letters accusing Sen. Barack Obama of socialism for supporting subsidized health insurance, my dictionary tells me that socialism is state ownership of industry and land. I must have missed Obama's speech in which he proposed that. In reality, when right-wing radicals in this country scream "socialism," they are in reality opposing the government trying to help people. Here are just a few of the things right-wing radicals have called "socialism": banning child labor, setting the eight- hour work day, creation of Social Security and Medicare.
