NEW YORK -- Double Dutch, the popular jump-roping pastime, soon could become a varsity sport in New York City public schools to attract more girls to athletics.

The Public School Athletic League is considering adding the game to school teams as early as next spring.

A demonstration clinic was held recently at Brooklyn's Boys & Girls High School to gauge interest. The activity, often seen on the sidewalks, involves jumpers hopping between two ropes twirled like eggbeaters by turners. Players earn points based on speed and innovative moves.
