IRS works to provide stimulus for those who don't file taxes

Retirees and disabled veterans: Come get your money.

The Internal Revenue Service is launching a campaign to make sure 5.2 million people who normally do not have to file tax returns get their economic stimulus checks. Tax returns must be filed in order to get the checks, which are at least $300 to those who qualify. So far, about three-fourths of the targeted population have filed returns.

Getting the economic stimulus check doesn't mean retirees will have to start filing tax returns from here on out, the IRS reports. And the stimulus payment is not taxable.

The IRS is working with AARP, the National Council on Aging, United Way of America and other groups to get the word out. Tax returns must be filed by Oct. 15.

The IRS is sending letters that include a tax form people can send in. Forms and answers to questions also are available at www.irs.gov.
