Tips for saving gas

Deseret News (Salt Lake City),  Jul 2, 2008

While savvy driving saves gas, some driving techniques popular among hypermilers are dangerous and illegal.

Do:

-- Check tire pressure at least once a month and inflate tires to the vehicle manufacturer's standards listed in the owner's manual. Fuel efficiency is reduced by up to 2 percent for each pound of pressure tires are under-inflated.

-- Smoothly and easily accelerate and brake.

-- Use cruise control to maintain a steady speed.

-- Use the lowest grade fuel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the climate to avoid engine damage.

Don't:

-- Roll through stop signs.

-- Drive at erratic and unsafe speeds.

-- Tailgate semis to avoid wind resistance. State law requires vehicles traveling under 55 mph to stay 2 seconds behind the vehicle ahead of them and at least 4 seconds behind when traveling over 55 mph.
